When the future was now
In coincidence with Nam June Paik’s retrospective in Tate Liverpool and FACT(Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) from 17 December 2010 to 13 March 2011, Wulf Herzogenrath wrote for TATE ETC this spring. In 1976 Herzogenrath curated the exhibition in Kolnischer Kunstverein, which was Paik’s first European museum exhibition. In this paper , Herzogenath recollects the early days of Nam June Paik who was “both anti-artist and artist in one, to be a theoretician and practitioner of our networked world at the same time” and who loved “anti-technological technology.”
